Bathroom Mixer Taps Buying Guide
After you have finished remodelling or building your bathroom, now it's time for the finer things - the bath taps. These practical details should be functional, but also should complete the entire look of the bathroom. Before you start your mixer tap shopping, there are a few things to consider. Besides the style of your bathroom and the finish of the taps, you should check the water pressure and the number of tap holes. Knowing this will help you choose the exact model of tap you need.
Check the Water Pressure and Tap Holes
Before you start your shopping, it's important to check two things. First, check the water pressure in your home. A decent flow is crucial for a quality shower and anything else that involves water. If your home has a gravity-fed system it means that the water pressure is low. A combination boiler system gives medium to high pressure.
Most single-lever mixers, wall-mounted and floor-standing taps require high water pressure to work properly. Taps with two handles and pillar taps can work with lower pressure. Low-pressure taps work well with a high-pressure system. If you use high-pressure taps in a low-pressure system, the water flow will be slower and you will need more time to complete your shower, or fill a bath.
Knowing what type of pressure system your home has will save you time and money. Once you have checked the pressure, check the tap holes. How many tap holes are in your bath, basin or bidet? Usually, most bathrooms have up to three pre-drilled tap holes. Most modern basins come with one tap hole that works excellent for mono mixer taps. If your bathroom has a traditional-style basin, it will probably have two holes for hot and cold water taps.
Bathroom Taps Style
Now that you know the basic things, you should pay attention to the most important thing - the style. When choosing your mixer tap, be sure it will match the style of the entire bathroom. If it's a modern and minimalistic bathroom, then a simple tap with sleek lines will be the best choice. If the bathroom is ornate and the style is more traditional or royal-looking, then go for taps that have a gold finish and orated handles.
Don't forget to match the style of the sink and the tap (consider this if you're changing only the tap and not the whole basin or vanity).
Traditional Style
Bathrooms in this style usually ooze the old style. They have heavily ornamented vanities, vintage-looking tiles, chandeliers, heavy-framed mirrors, you get the picture. In this case, the taps must be in the same style. Gold-finished taps that have extra decors such as dragon heads, flowers or lace-like originates will be a great choice. If your basin has traditional pillar taps, choose timeless elegant taps that won't stand out in your bathroom concept.
Modern Style
If your bathroom has a modern or contemporary style, it means that there aren't too many things. Minimalism with sleek and simple lines is what modern style is about. Modern taps come with simple and clean lines. Usually, they have geometric styling. Choose matte or shiny finish in silver. You may also choose taps with features such as touch-sensitive operation spouts.
Tap Mixer Materials
Ceramic Discs
The ceramic disc taps are hardwearing and won't easily tear and wear off If you're looking for long-term use, then these are the ideal choice. Most ceramic disc taps need only 3/4 turn to go from off to on. This makes them easy to use for everyone, both children and elderly people.
Solid Brass
Solid bras are corrosion-resistant. Usually, they are made of recycled brass, but you can find models made from pure brass. This metal has no impurities so the water won't have that unpleasant taste that is often found in regular bathroom taps.
Mixer Taps Finish
Nickel
This is a new option that becomes more and more popular on the market. Nickle gives the taps a light gunmetal look that is perfect for modern and contemporary baths. It is a bit pricy, but the sleek look will last for a long time and can fit even in the most carefully designed modern bathrooms.
Gold
This finish is popular among people who love to stick to the traditional and royal-look style. Some people avoid gold finish because of its reputation that it can easily tarnish or peel. However, nowadays most of the quality-made gold-finished taps are made of "Antique Gold" which is lighter and has a shinier chrome-gold finish that's more robust. This colour varies (darker to lighter) which is essential if you want to replace your old gold-finished taps. This way you can choose the hue that matches your other taps.
Chrome
Chrome is the most popular finish for toilet taps. Most taps you will come across are chrome-finished. Chrome-plated taps are resistant to corrosion and won't scratch easily. The shiny, reflective finish is very easy to clean and is ideal if you want that sleek modern look. You can go with chrome even if your bathroom is in the traditional style.
